Home improvements could include any repair, remodeling, construction or maintenance task from your attic down to your basement. Problems and surprises are endemic to the remodeling process, but they can be minimized by careful planning and a healthy dose of pragmatism.

Some thing you need to know about DIY home improvement:

  • Learning from a pro is easier and a lot less expensive than enrolling in the school of hard knocks. Look for homeowner education organizations in your area, they have a wide variety of classes and courses about remodeling.
  • Know where to save and where to spend. Set a realistic budget.
  • Do as much of the work yourself as you can, but be realistic about how much you can do and how well you can do it.
  • Choose a contractor (or an architect) by what he builds, not by what he says. Always ask for references, and then follow up on them.
  • Be prepared for more of everything: more expense, more time, more disruption, more problems than you planned on.

With any DIY home improvement work, safety should be given top priority. Keep the work area tidy. If you have any doubts whatsoever about how to safely use any material, or equipment, ask the manufacturer or supplier. When working in the vicinity of electrical items or cables, make sure the electricity supply is off and the fuse removed. To guard against contamination and/or damage to appliances and boilers, new plumbing work should be flushed through before connecting to the system. Take care with ladders and access equipment. Ensure that they are properly erected and stable. Keep children and pets away from the work area. Store all tools and materials out of their reach. Many products are toxic.

Always read the labels on materials to ensure that you know what safety precautions are required and action to be taken in the event of an accident. Many products give off harmful vapors. The recommendations regarding ventilation and/or respiratory protection should always be followed. DIY Fix It
